Turning Life Upside Down For The Better - Enjoy Pain Says Dave Goggins

I was listening to a podcast the other day by a guy that's kind of exploded his reach in the last year or so, even though he's been around for a while, he's is now only starting to get into the minds of everyday Australians.

If you haven't heard of him his name is Dave Goggins, and he's the most hardcore guy when it comes to motivation that I've ever heard. If you want to get started listening to him, you can check him out on Joe Rogan and also numerous other podcasts.

Dave Goggins Message

Dave Goggins has a good story. He had a rough childhood, and has created a life that's extreme. But the story is not enough, it's also about his message, and more importantly the way he delivers it. I mean......the man is extreme, and so is his messaging.

can't hurt me

To be clear, Dave Goggins is an ultra athlete. He runs......and runs alot. He tells stories of pain and suffering and how it's made him a better person. His message though is simple and amplifies the Nike slogan of "Just Do It". This is what I like about him, there are no excuses. The whole idea that you can make all the excuses in the world, and the most common one is I just don't have time to exercise.

How He's Helped Me

greater cognitive ability

I'm in my early 40s, with a partner and two young daughters. I run a business and so does my partner. We are completely accountable for our own living and lifestyle.....we don't rely on a 'job" to put food on the table or a roof over our head. There is no "paycheck". We work hard.....really hard to make our businesses and out life work. But......I haven't been that good to my body or mind over the last 20 years.  I've always been active, but I probably haven't had the best diet, and I certainly have drunk too much alcohol. On top of that I'll admit that a times I've made excuses about getting healthier, eating well and exercising more. One of Dave's 'things' is,

"When I get up at 5am and it's and raining outside......I really don't want to go for a run. It's not nice.....the difference between me and the next guy, is that I just put on my running shoes......and go out an run"
So while this is super simple, it resonates with me. I use to get up at 8am and go to bed late, like midnight everyday. I kept telling myself I was being productive each day, but deep down I knew I was not. I'm kind of a "cold turkey" person ie. I need to go in all guns blazing when I make a change in my life for it to stick. So..... I decided to turn my life upside down, or reversed my habits. So what did I do?

What I Changed

  • From midnight bed time, I now go to bed at between 9pm and 10pm
  • I now get up at 5am everyday, then drink my Curavita Green Boost.
  • I now make myself ride my bike - rain hail or shine, every morning for around 40 mins. (I have a dodgy knee - I physically can't run)
  • I don't drink during the week, and limit it on the weekends

When I read the above now, it's really only 4 or 5 things that I've changed, but it's made a massive difference in my life.

How Do I Feel?

Weirdly, I feel less tired. I have more energy during the day and when I used to get dozy at around 3pm, now I'm still full speed. It's very weird as I thought I would get tired in the afternoon. I'm more productive in my work, and I'm getting much more done, in less time, and higher quality. I'm pretty sure it's to do with getting up early and exercising in the morning. But I'm not an expert in this area. All I know is what I'm feeling. Hindsight is interesting. I now really wish I had made this change years ago.
